Iceboating: Hanging in the balance

Published on January 30th, 2024

The amount of ice on the Great Lakes has been steadily and significantly decreasing over the past five decades, according to scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Those who have built their lives around the ice are now hanging in the balance.

“We don’t like to talk about it because it’s kind of scary, but if we go five, 10 years without ice, do we really have a future in this area?” said Brian Goldberg, a life-long ice boater. “I’ve been ice boating ever since I was a young child. Now, it’s a way of life and a business for me too.”

Goldberg is the owner of Greiner Sailmakers in Toledo, OH. His grandfather, John Greiner founded the business, and taught Goldberg ice boating. – Full report
