IOC rejects crossover sports for now

Published on June 13th, 2026

The idea occasionally resurfaces – what if iceboating was in the Olympics? With Sailing as a founding Olympic sport, it is not such a wild thought for both summer and winter games to have representation. However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is not taking the call…yet.

In a report by insidethegames, the IOC Executive Board confirmed on June 10 that summer disciplines would not be included at the French Alps 2030 Games, while leaving the door open for a later review.

“We decided, very clear for the upcoming Winter Olympics that we would like to keep the identity of winter sport, of snow and ice. These are the Winter Olympic Games. No crossover at the moment,” said Karl Stoss, the Austrian IOC member and chair of the working group on the Olympic program.

The decision leaves cross-country running, trail running, cyclo-cross, and gravel out of the French Alps 2030 program, proposals linked to the debate over how to refresh the Olympic product, attract new audiences, and open up more opportunities for countries without a strong tradition in snow or ice. – Full report
