First protest of Paris 2024

Published on July 25th, 2024

Among the 10 events on the Sailing Program for Paris 2024, racing in the Men’s and Women’s One Person Dinghy and Men’s and Women’s Windsurfing use supplied equipment. While this eases the financial burden to compete, variances and restrictions are problematic.

Before racing in the Women’s Windsurfing is to begin July 28, the first protest for the Paris 2024 Games occurred July 25 when medal contender Sara Wennekes (NED) sanded her boom to improve her grip. After attempts to gain approval for this change got lost in the shuffle, and without written permission, she got snared by the requirement for competitors to return equipment in its original condition.

An initial scoring penalty was issued, but because of the substantial confusion created by the event officials, and as Wennekes was acting in good faith though the process, the punishment was decreased to a 5% penalty that would be applied to her first race for this breach.  To read details of the protest, click here.
