Activating club members to go sailing

Published on July 29th, 2024

A fundamental aspect of yacht clubs is to encourage participation in club activities, and nothing is more fundamental to yacht clubs than to get members on the water. Don Finkle shares how his club on Lake Ontario has a program called ‘Social Sailing‘ that is doing something about it:

Boat owning members of the Youngstown Yacht Club offer to take those who do not own their own boats out sailing. Tonight, we will have four boats going with a total of 18 guests. The idea is to get more people out on the water, provide more value for their membership, and meet fellow members we might not otherwise get to know.

It also helps encourage those who might like to try sailing but are not sure if they are ready to jump in to buy a boat yet. It has become a popular event every Thursday night program during the summer. You might try something similar at your club or marina.
