Lara Vadlau and Lukas Maehr (AUT) ended the Opening Series with a surge to top of the standings. The Austrian duo picked up a fifth and second on the water to head into the Medal Race tomorrow with a seven-point advantage.
Spain’s Jordi Xammar and Nora Brugman remained in second after placing third in race seven. Japan’s Keiju Okada and Miho Yoshioka opened the day with ninth in race seven, but recovered in race eight to cross the line third, putting them four points off the Spanish crew.
No crew has secured a medal heading into the deciding race tomorrow.
“We have to sail smart tomorrow,” noted Vadlau. “We have almost no advantage. We are here to win a medal, this was our goal from the beginning and now we are in a really good position. It all depends on tomorrow.”

Concluding their Opening Series, Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti (ESP) guaranteed themselves at least a silver heading into the Medal Race tomorrow. The Italian pair started the day on the wrong foot, getting disqualified from race ten due to an early start. However, they recovered and finished the day with a 5-2 which puts them 14 points clear at the top of the Nacra 17 rankings.
Argentina’s Mateo Majdalani and Eugenia Bosco cemented their status as the primary challengers by posting a 1-2-12, meaning they are the only crew that can tip the Italians to gold.
Great Britain’s John Gimson and Anna Burnet moved up to third with a 5-1-3. However, they can take nothing for granted, as they sit level on points with New Zealand’s Micah Wilkinson and Erica Dawson in fourth.
“There’s not going to be a match race, we are going to try and do our race, control the situation based on the points we have,” explained Tita. “Second, third, and fourth are going to have a big battle and we’re going to try and stay out of that and do our race and control the advantage that we have.”
Current Results:

2. Mateo Majdalani/ Eugenia Bosco (ARG)
3. John Gimson/ Anna Burnet (GBR)

Men’s and Women’s Kite
Another day of light wind meant the women were only on the water long enough to race once, but the men completed two races.
Slovenia’s Toni Vodisek made the most of his outing, with scores of 1-12 enough to edge him in front of Singapore’s Max Maeder by three points. Riccardo Pianosi (ITA) jumped to third today by posting a 4-1.
Switzerland’s Elena Lengwiler began the day top of the standings, but dropped out of the top three altogether following a DNS. France’s Lauriane Nolot made the most of the opening, winning the first and only race to move into the lead.
Great Britain’s Ellie Aldridge also received a DNS, but held on to second overall as USA’s Daniela Moroz finished seventh, which was not enough to overtake the British athlete.
“It was very light wind, very tricky survival conditions again,” described Moroz. “I was happy to make it around and not swim. I had a really good plan in my head and I executed it, but it didn’t end up being the right plan for that race. Off the start I got pinned out going left.”
The Kite fleets hope to wrap up their Opening Series tomorrow and host their Medal Series on August 8.
