Race official appointments for LA2028

While the International Olympic Committee (IOC) serves as the supreme governing authority over the Olympic Games as a whole, it delegates the specific rules, technical operations, and tournament structures of each sport to its respective International Sports Federation.

There are 36 sports to be held at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, with World Sailing, the world governing body of the sport, determining the equipment, format, and administration for the ten sailing events.

While it is common for the Sailing events to be staggered during the Olympic Games, a local power struggle also has the competition occurring at two California venues – Long Beach and Los Angeles.

World Sailing previously named two delegates tasked with ensuring sailing at the Olympic Games will be a fair competition at the two venues, and now the organization reveals the lead Race Official appointments for the LA28 Olympic Sailing Competition.

The appointees – three men and two women – are:

• Ana Sanchez Del Campo (ESP), Chair of the International Jury – Continuing in the role following her leadership of the jury at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Ana will lead the jury at LA28 to ensure the Racing Rules of Sailing are properly applied to ensure a fair competition.

• Chris Lindsay (IRL), Chief Umpire – Chair of the World Sailing International Umpires Sub-Committee with Olympic experience as a member of the jury at Paris 2024, he was one of the first digital ITO positions appointed by World Sailing at an Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020.

• Corinne Aubert (FRA), Principal Race Officer – Prior Olympic experience as a race management ITO at Tokyo 2020 and in a national role as Course Race Officer at Paris 2024, she will be responsible for leading a team of Course Representatives responsible for organizing the racing of each Olympic Event with a supporting team of an additional International Race Officers.

• Bas Edmonds (GBR), Chair of the Technical Committee (Long Beach) – He is a leading specialist in board measurement with prior Olympic experience at Paris 2024.

• Dimitris Dimou (GRE), Chair of the Technical Committee (Port of LA) – He is the current chair of World Sailing’s Equipment Rules Sub-Committee and the Chair of the Technical Committee at Tokyo 2020.

Bas Edmonds and Dimitris Dimou will each be responsible for leading a committee of International Measurers at each venue, with a specific area of expertise related to the Olympic Equipment used in competition at the Games. The Technical Committee will be responsible for ensuring that each boat/board complies with the Class-specific rules.

“Each appointee brings extensive Olympic experience across race management, umpiring, jury leadership, and technical inspection,” noted Quanhai Li, World Sailing President. “We are confident their collective expertise will ensure World Sailing delivers an exceptional regatta in close partnership with LA28 and the IOC.”

The remaining Technical Official positions, including Vice-Chairs, have yet to be confirmed.
