Ensuring a safe, rewarding, and positive experience

World Sailing has launched its Safeguarding in Sport educational course, now accessible globally via the digital World Sailing Academy platform. The initiative represents a further step forward in the international governing body’s commitment to ensuring that everybody who participates in sailing can have a safe, rewarding, and positive experience.

Designed for all stakeholders across sailing, the e-learning course equips participants with the essential knowledge and practical skills required to protect athletes and participants from harm, harassment, and abuse. Starting with a module on Understanding Safeguarding, the course covers human rights, types of abuse and harassment in sport, the risk factors within sport and how to identify and prevent safeguarding concerns.

Through its clear visual learning and interactive elements, the course provides clear guidance on identifying potential issues, establishing robust prevention standards, how to respond and understanding proper reporting channels.

Participants can complete the self-paced course from any location, earning an official certificate upon successful completion to demonstrate understanding of international safeguarding standards.

Gillian Sanders OLY, World Sailing Integrity Manager & World Sailing Safeguarding Officer, said, “Educating our sailing community on safeguarding in sport is one of our most powerful prevention tools. By equipping coaches, officials, athletes and our wider community with the skills and knowledge to recognise and disrupt harmful behaviours early, we are actively cultivating a culture of transparency and an environment where the safety, well-being, and rights of everyone, especially children and vulnerable individuals, are prioritised and actively protected.”

Registration for the World Sailing Academy is free and open to anyone involved in sailing – whether an athlete, coach, race official, or part of the wider sailing community.
