One person has died and six remain missing after the luxury superyacht Bayesian with 22 people on board sank off the Sicilian coast on August 19. The missing included British tech giant Mike Lynch, his daughter Hannah Lynch, his lawyer and others. Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares and 14 other people survived.
Italy’s coastguard and firefighters brought 15 people to safety after the 56-metre (184-foot) sailboat capsized at about 5:00am (03:00 GMT) due to rough winds and choppy waters caused by a waterspout, Italian media reported.
Built in Italy by renowned builder Perini Navi and delivered in 2008, the yacht’s naval architecture was developed by Ron Holland Design and was formerly known as Salute and was last refitted in 2016. It is understood the hull lies at 45 metres of depth about half a mile from the coast. According to Boat International, the yacht had the largest aluminum masts of any sailing yacht on the water.
