America’s Cup: Nostalgia is so yesterday

Published on August 29th, 2024

Since the 2007 America’s Cup, the shift away from monohull keelboats has been polarizing. As boat speed increased, onboard action decreased. Flight control has taken precedent over familiar match race tactics. Past fans are now not, while others like Ricardo Lobato are all in:

I must admit, I was initially skeptical when I saw the first drafts of the new AC75. However, I thoroughly enjoyed the 2021 America’s Cup and am even more excited after watching the Preliminary Regatta.

Firstly, the technological advancements in the AC75s are not just “space-age marvels” but represent the pinnacle of modern engineering and design. These boats are pushing the boundaries of what is possible in sailing, achieving not only high final speeds but also unparalleled VMG upwind.

The races have become much more engaging. The pre-start phase has eliminated the tedious and lengthy dial-ups, leaving only the final approach battle between the leading boat and the pusher. It’s like match racing on steroids.

The argument that the racing is a “dull parade” overlooks the intense tactical battles that occur during the races. The ability to foil consistently and manage the boat’s performance under varying conditions adds a layer of complexity and excitement. Choosing the right strategies is even more crucial, as any wind difference can have significant consequences. The computer assisted umpires and 75-meter penalties keep the race tight and competitive.

Moreover, the physical demands on the crew, particularly the cyclists powering the hydraulics, are extraordinary. It’s an incredible solution to keep our sport powered solely by wind forces without the help of engines.

While nostalgia for the days of monohulls is understandable, it’s important to embrace the evolution of the sport. The America’s Cup has always been about pushing the limits and setting new standards in sailing. The foiling AC75s are the latest chapter in this storied history, bringing new challenges and opportunities for sailors, including intelligent systems to assist with foils and sails controls.

While the foiling America’s Cup may differ from the traditional format, it offers its own unique thrills and showcases the cutting-edge of sailing technology and skill. Embracing these changes can lead to many advancements in real-life sailing and are, indeed, really exciting to watch!
