Losing money on 37th America’s Cup

To profit from hosting the America’s Cup has once again proved elusive as the Port of Barcelona recorded a financial loss of €3.5 million from hosting the 2024 edition between August and October. Perhaps the City Council sensed this when they, soon after the final race, opted to not host again.
The income from the competition was around €1 million, which failed to offset the port’s €4.5 million spent to prepare for the teams and competition between 2022 and 2024. However, from a “reputation and international projection” point of view, port president José Alberto Carbonell found the America’s Cup to be an “enriching challenge” and a “huge excuse” to accelerate several investments. – Full report

Defender New Zealand will work with the Challenger of Record from Great Britain to organize the 38th America’s Cup. Anticipated to be held in 2027, the two teams have agreed on some details with the venue to be confirmed by June 2025 after Barcelona declined hosting another edition.
