LA28: Long Beach to host Sailing

This is becoming a soap opera. Despite a report in the Los Angeles Times, which is supported by a City of Long Beach press release, LA28 Organizing Committee informed us late on April 15 that the venue for Sailing has not been confirmed. Their update is in response to the details below, with final confirmation perhaps within a week.

Los Angeles, CA (April 15, 2025) – The organizing committee for the Los Angeles 2028 Games has announced an updated venue plan today which confirmed that Sailing will be held in Long Beach, CA. The City hosted several events during the 1984 Games, including Sailing, which will return to Belmont Shore in 2028.

Each Olympic sport federation submits venue requirements to the host city, with the local decisions than confirmed by the International Olympic Committee. Long Beach had been the initial choice for Sailing until the LA28 committee re-opened the process, which prompted LA Councilmember Tim McOsker to campaign for the event to be held in the Port of L.A.

McOsker promoted the neighborhood of San Pedro, located in his district, claiming better winds along with promises of spectator ticket revenue. San Pedro is approximately eight miles west of Long Beach, and while the area is well known within the sport, McOsker did not reveal seaweed issues along with insufficient infrastructure.

The confirmation comes as a relief to the US Olympic Sailing Program which has already established a base in Long Beach, along with three Olympic events – 49er, 49erFX, and Nacra 17 – which are using the venue to host their 2026 World Championships.

For 330 athletes, Sailing has equal medals and participation for men and women.
