Sailing’s been very, very good to me

I know I’m lucky that at 62, the conversation during my annual physical has little to do with health. My parents are clocking days in their 90s, so I’ve got good DNA, but sailing has been good for me too.

“I fully believe the fountain of youth is swirling around the cockpit bailer of a Thistle,” contends Bill Faude, Marketing guru for Harken. He’s not wrong. If you can keep doing late in life what you have always done, then what is age (other than skipping last call at the bar)?

In Harken’s quarterly digest of top news and stories called At The Front, they gathered notable masters such as Augie Diaz, John Dane III, and Jonathan McKee and asked how they keep the desire to get to the starting line.

The result, explained Bill, was how they “provide ideas you can use about shifting gears as you get older…how to stay motivated…how to set realistic goals…how to integrate younger sailors—or get yourself invited along by younger sailors. It’s quite inspiring.” – Full report
