Eight Bells: Don Trask
Published on September 30th, 2025
Sailing icon Don Trask, 92 years, passed away September 29, 2025 in Mooresville, North Carolina, surrounded by family and online well-wishes.
He started sailing as crew for his father, graduated to Snipes and then Stars where he won the 1966 North American Championship, two District Championships, and placed 3rd in the 1967 World Championship with crew Bill Kreysler, finishing behind only Paul Elvstrom and Lowell North.
“I personally owe him much of whatever success I’ve had in life,” said Kreysler.
However, Don’s most significant contribution to the sport was his tenacious dedication to the Laser Class. As the West Coast manufacturer, he could have done well simply taking orders, but instead dedicated years to growing the Class.
He introduced literally hundreds personally and likely thousands indirectly to this little boat, by his determination to create what most referred to as the West Coast Laser phenomena. Many of today’s most successful sailors owe their start to Don. He would do whatever it took to get people into a Laser and once in, made sure you became a part of the family.
As a tribute to aging champions, Don established in 1975 the International Masters Regatta on San Francisco Bay, inviting 60+ year old skippers like Elvstrom, Buchan, Burnham, Harken, North, etc. The San Diego Yacht Club has carried on his legacy since 2012, hosting the event each fall that blends comradery and competition in San Diego, CA.
