Miami, FL (October 30, 2025) – The U.S. Coast Guard has referred the tragic sailing camp crash in Biscayne Bay that left three young campers dead over the summer to the Department of Justice for possible criminal prosecution, officials said today.
Coast Guard officials said the July 28 collision between a barge being pushed by the vessel Wood Chuck and the sailboat carrying the campers was being referred for seaman’s manslaughter involving the towing company.
“After conducting a thorough marine casualty investigation, we’ve referred this case to Department of Justice for criminal investigation to ensure full accountability and help deter similar cases in the future,” Coast Guard Sector Miami Commander Capt. Frank J. Florio said in a statement. “As the process moves into this new phase, our thoughts and prayers are with those impacted by this tragic incident.” – Full report
