Four titles at ISCA World Championships

Four international were awarded at the 2025 ISCA (Sunfish) World Championships held December 5-12 in Salinas, Ecuador. Prior to naming the 54th World Champion, the racing got underway on December 5-7 for the Youth, Women’s, and Masters World Championships.

This was the inaugural Women’s World Championship which was dominated by Caterina Romero (Peru) who discarded a second-place finish to post a perfect scoreline of firsts. She finished 19 points ahead of Tania Zimmerman (Peru), with Laura Jeffers (USA) of the Scuttlebutt Sailing Club as the top North American, placing seventh.

The Youth World Championship, for entrants that had not yet reached their 19th birthday, was handily won by Tadas Koreiva (Ecuador) who also had all firsts aside from a discarded second-place finish. He finished 21 points ahead of fellow Ecuadorian Rafael Sarrazin with Anais Craig (ISV) as the top North American finishing 17th.

Peter Stanton (USVI) prevailed in the Masters Worlds (40+ year olds) by 13 points over Andy Beeckman (USA). Stanton also won the Apprentice title (40-49 years) with other sub-titles going to Beekman (Master 50-59 years), Mike Ingham (USA, Grand Master 60-69), and Beech Higby (ISV, Great Grand Master 70-79).

The Open Worlds on December 9-12 attracted 84 competitors began with winds pushing 20 knots as multi-time World Champion Jean Paul de Trezegnies (Peru) took the early lead. But as the breeze moderated, he was overtaken by Simon Gomez Ortiz who became the first Colombian to win an ISCA Worlds.

Canada’s Luke Ramsay was the top North American in 4th, followed by Conner Blouin (USA), the defending champion.

Women accounted for 21% of the fleet in the Open Worlds, with Maria Jose Cucalon (Ecuador) as the top female, finishing 16th while Rafael Sarrazin, also of Ecuador, was the top youth in 20th.

Zim Sailing, the exclusive builder of the ISCA, supplied 68 brand-new boats. In addition, all competitors were issued new North Sails to equalize the boats.
