I’m somebody now!

Steve Martin starred in the 1979 comedy movie The Jerk in which his character Navin Johnson believes he was born a poor black child in Mississippi. But upon figuring he was white, he heads north to St. Louis to find himself. After landing a job at a gas station, he has a breakthrough moment:

Navin Johnson: “The new phone book’s here! The new phone book’s here!”

Mr. Hartounian: “Boy, l wish l could get that excited about nothin’.”

Navin Johnson: “Nothing? Are you kidding? Page 73. Johnson, Navin R. I’m somebody now! Millions of people look at this book every day. This is the kind of spontaneous publicity your name in print, that makes people… I’m in print. Things are going to start happening to me now.”
