How I set up instruments offshore

Most offshore race boats are not slow because of bad sailing. They are slow because they are looking at the wrong numbers. And the worst part? Most crews never realize it. Offshore coach Stuart Greenfield explains:


There is a moment, early in any race-boat coaching engagement, when I know whether I am in for a quick conversation or a long afternoon.

It happens when I step onto the boat for the first time.

I am not looking at the instruments, not yet. I am watching how the crew relate to them. Are their eyes drawn immediately to the displays like the way some people compulsively check their phones? Or are they scanning the boat, the horizon, the trim, using the instruments as one input among many? – Full report
