Designed to maximize modern kinetics
Published on April 28th, 2026
The Mixed Two Person Dinghy event at the Olympic Games uses the 470 boat, and when racing above 10 knots, all propulsion restrictions in the Racing Rules of Sailing (Rule 42) are turned off. Crews can continuously pump sails, rock the boat, and use body movement to generate speed.
It is a free-for-all, and prominent 470 builder Mackay Boats has developed the new M10 hull design to maximize the modern kinetics now in use.
The hull now features increased volume in both the bow and stern, providing greater stability and balance to better suit more aggressive downwind and upwind sailing. The bow has been refined for a fairer, cleaner hull shape to help the boat slice through waves with aggressive steering.
The deck has been redesigned and the cockpit is now wider; with the gunwales higher amidships. The maximum deck width extends further aft, enabling the skipper to contribute even more to righting moment—critical when driving the boat with powerful body movements.
Body pumping is a highly technical and physical skill, involving rapid, rhythmic movements to generate speed by flexing the sail leech. With the lightweight (265 lbs) and responsive hull, the M10 has been designed to translate this physical effort directly into better forward speed, upwind or downwind.
