Breaking eggs to make an omelette

The International Society for the Perpetuation of Cruelty to Racing Yachtsmen annually recognize, with their Moosehead Awards, the foibles and fumbles of various Race Committees in northeastern USA.

Due to the rating fiasco with the 2026 Newport Bermuda Race, the debate for worthy candidates could be short.

The biennial race began in 2024 using Forecast – Time Correction Factor (F-TCF) for scoring which combines a boat’s rating with routing software to predict when each boat should finish. It all went well enough, but not so in 2026.

The system seeks for the results to better reflect how each boat is sailed, but got derailed by technical issues. Complicit in the recent scoring debacle was US Sailing which issued the ratings, recognized their error, and now provides additional context to the situation.
