Spain win at SailGP Portsmouth

Spain’s Los Gallos have claimed their second consecutive SailGP event win, held July 25-26 in Portsmouth, GBR. Led by skipper Diego Botin, the Season 4 champions defeated Artemis (SWE), Explora Swiss (SUI) and Northstar (CAN) in a four-boat final that went down to the wire.

“An amazing weekend – with the conditions we had – very windy, with a small wing, which we love,” said Botin. “It was amazing to get the win back to back after Halifax; it felt like we were gelling as a team in every aspect.”

Finishing second, Artemis’ scorecard never dipped below third in the split fleet racing in which the top two from each group advanced to the finals. Driver Nathan Outteridge said, “We said we’ve got to start working on our consistency, and to get two finals in a row now, and two seconds, is really pleasing.

“The final could have gone either way. We had the lead, we had a really good start, and it’s always tough when you get the choice of which top mark you want to take and the boat behind goes the other way and passes you. It’s a little tough, but the fact that we’re in the mix and doing all the basic things really well is really good.”

With the points tallied, Spain inched closer to Australia’s Bonds Flying Roos in the Rolex SailGP Championship standings, while Artemis moved into third overall – overtaking the United States and Emirates GBR after a standout event in Portsmouth.

Next month, the Rolex SailGP Championship races ahead to Germany for the second iteration of the ROCKWOOL Germany Sail Grand Prix | Sassnitz on August 22-23, 2026.

Note: The 11th event was moved to Geneva from Saint-Tropez, France.

Season 6 format:
• Thirteen teams compete in identical F50 catamarans.
• Each event is two days.
• All teams compete in up to seven qualifying fleet races of approximately 15 minutes.
• The top three teams from qualifying advance to a final race for the event title.
• The season ends with the Grand Final event which includes the Championship Final Race for the top three teams in the season standing.
• All league teams are privately owned, with New Zealand as the last to be acquired on June 19, 2026.
Note: The league is experimenting with a split fleet format which advances the top two from each fleet for a 4-boat final.

Season 6 prize money:
A total of USD $12.8 million is up for grabs in 2026. The winner of each of the 13 events takes home $400,000, with $260,000 for second and $140,000 for third. The team with the most points at the end of the season wins $400,000, while the team that wins the Championship Final Race wins USD $2 million.

F50 Configuration:
All teams use same configuration based on weather forecast. There are four wingsail sizes (18m, 24m, 27.5m, and 29m), six jib sizes, two T-foil daggerboards (high-speed and low-speed), and one set of rudders with high-speed and low-speed settings.
