What would you tell a sailor?

The Old Boat Sailor asked the question on Facebook, “What would you tell a sailor buying their first boat to absolutely avoid?” Here are some of the comments:

• Don’t buy the biggest boat you want, think about buying the smallest boat you can handle alone if needed and still feel safe. – James Mccarthy

• Have a healthy respect for the sea. – Lloyd McDonald

• Do it now. If you wait you will not do it. Move. Now. Not tomorrow. – Marty Gazaway

• Don’t buy too small, buy as much boat as you can afford! – Bill Scanlon

• Don’t but an old fixer upper…it may be cheap but work, parts, and time cost more than something in good shape. – Lorne Seeger

• Always seek good solid advice from experienced boat owners that have the same interests as you. Cost is always a factor so be prepared to spend a bit more for peace of mind and make sure to get a qualified inspection done before purchasing a boat. You might have to foot that bill but it could save thousands of dollars. – Wilf Fitzhugh

• Understand that at some point your gf/wife might make you pick between them and the boat. My advice is to pick a good partner first and the boat will sort itself out. – Gregory S Kitchen
