Brazilian Robert Scheidt was the first Olympic champion in the history of the Laser Class, winning gold at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games. He owned the Class for over two decades, beginning with the 1991 Junior World title before securing another gold and silver medal along with nine Class World Championships.

Now its his son’s turn.

The 2026 ILCA 6 Youth World Championship had 307 men competing on August 14-19 in Aarhus, Denmark. Erik Scheidt dominated the series, winning three races and finishing in the top five for 10 of the 12 races. His 32nd in the final race, which was his discard, was a celebration lap.

“I had some expectations coming into the championship, but I did not expect to win,” he admitted. “In the end, I think consistency was the key.” Seems like it, winning by 43 points. “My father is always by my side and helps me a lot with the psychological side.”

Among the 122 women, Hermionie Ghicas (GRE) was even more dominant, winning nine of 11 races, with Ireland and New Zealand completing the podium. The top North American was Bahamian Eliza Denning in 12th with Paloma Apprigo (USA) in 29th, tops among the 14 Americans.
