Damage, injury for 2025 Transpac Race

After the 53-boat fleet began the 2025 Transpac Race with staggered starts on July 1, July 3 and July 5, attrition has begun for the 53rd edition of the biennial 2225 nm crossing from Los Angeles to Honolulu.

Race Committee received word at 1800 PDT on July 4, that the J/125 Vortices 2 retired from the race due to rudder issues. At approximately 1800 PDT on July 5, notification from Reichel/Pugh 63 GoodEnergy noted they had retired due to rudder bearing issues. All aboard both boats were safe and back in the mainland.

At 2134 PDT on July 5, Race Committee received notice that the Andrews 68 Rock n Roll retired from the race due to an injury to co-skipper/owner John Sangmeister from a fall. Sangmeister received medical attention at Avalon on Catalina Island for three fractured ribs and a collapsed lung, and then transferred to a mainland hospital. The vessel is proceeding safely to Long Beach with the remainder of the crew.

At 1545 PDT on July 6, the Race Committee received a call from the Spencer 65 Ragtime reporting they were retiring from the race and heading to San Diego. No additional information is currently available.

RAGTIME UPDATE: On July 6, a crewmember was evacuated from the vessel due to a medical issue, approximately 230 miles offshore in a coordinated operation involving the US Coast Guard and the US Air Force. The sailor was airlifted to Scripps Memorial Hospital in San Diego, where they were treated, subsequently released, and are now doing well. Ragtime returning to San Pedro with an estimated arrival time of 0400 PDT on July 8. All aboard are safe.
