VIDEO: Honoring the memory of Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson

It was on May 9, 2013 when Britain’s Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson perished.

On San Francisco Bay, America’s Cup defender Oracle Team USA and challenger Artemis Racing were training when tragedy occurred. Nearing the end of the session, the 72-ft Artemis catamaran bore violently away from the Oracle, and swiftly capsized. Beneath its vast hull, Olympic gold medalist Simpson found himself trapped, and despite desperate efforts to save him, the married father of two could not be rescued from the wreckage. Simpson was just 36.

To honor his memory, the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation is planning a monster sized attempt to set a new Guinness World Record for ‘The Largest Sailing Event in the World’, which is being called ‘Bart’s Bash’!

The idea is to have a mass participation club race across the UK and the whole World. “It is one of those ideas that has huge potential to be a major, major event that absolutely honours the core of what Andrew was about,” said Jez Payne from ‘The Bart Project’.

‘Bart’s Bash’ is scheduled for 11:00 BST on Sunday 21st September.
