San Diego wins Southern Soiland Cup

Published on November 5th, 2017

San Diego Yacht Club started fast and ended fast to win the 2017 Southern Soiland Cup team regatta hosted by Southern Yacht Club on November 3-5 in New Orleans, LA.

Eight high-level teams from all three American coasts competed in Flying Scots on Lake Pontchartrain for the Southern Soiland Cup trophy which was generously donated to SYC by Newport Harbor Yacht Club after Hurricane Katrina.

After leading the first round robin but finishing one point behind after the second round robin, San Diego defeated College of Charleston, the defending champs, 3-1 in a gold knock-out series to win the regatta. Newport Harbor Yacht Club won third over host Southern Yacht Club in the consolation series.

Lake Pontchartrain offered up variable light breezes and temperatures in the 80s for the three days of the regatta, but PRO Nathan Adams and his race committee team were able to squeeze in two full round robins followed by silver and gold knock-out series to crown the winners.

San Diego and College of Charleston traded wins to begin the final gold knock-out series. Then San Diego closed out the regatta with two straight victories to claim the 2017 trophy and eventually fill it with champagne on the upper deck of Southern Yacht Club accompanied by the traditional servings of chargrilled oysters for the teams and volunteers.

The order of finish for the rest of the teams was New York Yacht Club, St. Petersburg Yacht Club, Eastern Yacht Club, and Annapolis Yacht Club.
