Danes lead Star Midwinter Championship

Miami, FL (February 8, 2018) – Forty-four teams from nine countries headed out to Biscayne Bay for day one of the Star Midwinter Championship. Clear skies and light breeze were welcomed by many teams class to the fleet and old friends jumping into the boat after after a long absence.

Topping the fleet after two races was Danish sailing legend Jørgeb Shönherr with crew Jorn Eli Gravad. The pair has been training over the last three months to get up to speed in the competitive international fleet. In second for the day were the O’Leary brothers from Ireland, making a come back after skipper Peter’s five year absence from the class.

Winning the first race of the series and finishing third for the day were the Italian team of Luca Modena sailing with SSL number two ranked crew, Sergio Lambertenghi. Modena – coach of Robert Scheidt, Bruno Prada, and Augie Diaz – was happy to be out of the coach boat and in front of the pack.

As part of the Star Winter Series, racing continues through Sunday, February 11.

Feb 8-9, 2018 – Walker Cup (up to 5 races)
Feb 8-11, 2018 – Star Midwinters (includes Walker Cup; up to 8 races)

Scoring for the Star Winter Series: Points shall be determined from the finishing place at each regatta. The sum of the best three of the four 2-day regattas, plus the Mid-Winter regatta place multiplied by two, will determine the winner of the Winter series.
