Big lead at Melges 32 World Champs

Published on October 26th, 2019

Valencia, Spain (October 26, 2019) – Less than 24 hours to the final verdict of the 2019 Melges 32 World Championship event; after two more races today (for a total of five completed so far), the German team La Pericolosa skippered by Christian Schwoerer (with Nick Asher at the tactics) remains at the top of the standings. The team had two great races today finishing 1st and 5th, to extend the margin over the crews that are chasing.

In a day once again characterized by very light wind, Wilma, skippered by Fritz Homann (assisted on the tactics by Nico Celon) climbed in to second place (finishes of 2 and 6 today) seven points from the compatriot La Pericolosa.

The first of the Italians, Caipirinha, skippered by Martin Reintjes (with Gabriele Benussi) slipped in third place and is the boat whose ranking could benefit, more than others, of the introduction of the discard (coming into play with the completion of the sixth race).

The top five at the eve of the last day is rounded out by two other Italian representatives: Calvi Network by Carlo Alberini (with Karlo Hmeljak on tactics), fourth at eleven points from the leader, and Vitamina by Andrea Lacorte (with Jonathan McKee) at three points from Calvi Network and six from the lowest step of the virtual podium.

On the day that saw Torpyone by Edoardo Lupi and Massimo Pessina take the bullet in the fourth race, the World Champion of the last two editions, Pavel Kuznetsov’s Russian Tavatuy, definitely abandons the World title, occupying tenth place of the overall ranking.

In the Corinthian ranking, the lead is now held by the German entry Homanit skippered by Kilian Holzapfel.

Racing at the Melges 32 World Championship regatta runs through October 27, 2019.
