‘Super Mackinac’ Race: 568 miles of Great Lakes sailing

Published on February 24th, 2015

Bayview Yacht Club (Detroit, MI) and Chicago Yacht Club (Chicago, IL) will jointly host the ‘Super Mackinac’ Race in July of 2015. The event will start in the waters of Lake Michigan off downtown Chicago on July 11, with competitors following the traditional course to Mackinac Island before moving east past Bois Blanc Island and then south along the Michigan shore of Lake Huron, finishing offshore the Port Huron Yacht Club for a total rhumb line distance of 568 statute miles.

“This ‘Super Mac’ will be a true test of boat and crew alike, and we hope to make this even a highlight of the racing season,” said Matt Gallagher, Chairman of the 107th Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac. “It really was something the competitors asked for,” said Bayview Mackinac Race Chairman Peter Wenzler.

This year marks the 91st running of the Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race and the 107th running of the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac. This will be the first running of the Super Mackinac since 2009. Over 330 boats participated in the 2014 ‘Chicago Mac” while over 220 made it to the line for the ‘Bayview Mac’.

“Bayview and the Chicago Yacht Club look forward to hosting a safe and enjoyable event for all competitors who choose to take part in this one-of-a-kind opportunity in freshwater sailing,” said Wenzler.

Further details on the race, including a Notice of Race and application process, will be made available to potential participants in the coming weeks.
