Tequila shots and huevos rancheros

Published on March 16th, 2022

The 2022 San Diego to Vallarta International Yacht Race divided the 30 entrants among three start dates on March 10-12 for the 1050 nm course. Here’s the update from March 16, 2022:

While the fleet worked their way toward Puerto Vallarta, the shore team made their grocery store runs and rested up in preparation for the arrivals. That shift from siestas to tequila shots began yesterday at sunset when the modified Volvo 70 Pyewacket 70 arrived.

With their finish at the entrance to Banderas Bay, Roy P. Disney and the crew of Pyewacket 70 set a new monohull record for the course of 3:04:38:02. Disney’s team bested the Bakewell White 100 Rio100’s 2016 mark by one hour and 4 minutes. Less than an hour later, Rio100 also beat their 2016 time by about 25 minutes.

The next finishers came just after midnight and it has been non-stop huevos rancheros through the day. All seven boats in ORR-1 are now on barstools with Tom Holthus’ Botin 56 BadPak as the class winner, but sitting second overall to the lone ORR-2 entry on terra firma – John Raymont’s Ker 51 Fast Exit II.

With thirteen boats listed as starting tabs at the local pubs, the podium among the six divisions should be well known by last call. Hopefully the shore team finds their keyboard soon too.
