Five World Champions Crowned early At ISAF Youth Worlds

Published on July 18th, 2013

Limassol, Cyprus (July 18, 2013) – With one race remaining on Friday at the 2013 Sail First ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship, winners have already been decided in the RS:X Boys, RS:X Girls, Laser Radial Girls, SL16, and International 420 Girls

Great Britain’s Kieran Martin has not finished outside the top four once all week and deservedly takes the RS:X Boys gold medal whilst China’s Lu Yunxiu’s consistency proved decisive as she took her nations first ever ISAF Youth Worlds gold medal in the RS:X Girls.

Norway’s Line Flem Host has been dominant in the Laser Radial Girls all week and has a massive 29 point advantage whilst New Zealand’s Isaac McHardie and Micah Wilkinson got the SL16 job done on the penultimate day of racing.

Australia’s Carrie Smith and Ella Clark were crowned I-420 Girls ISAF Youth World Champions late in the day after Italy’s Ilaria Paternoster and Benedetta di Salle picked up a non excludable disqualification.

Breeze and waves spoilt the sailors once again in the sun kissed Island as the Mediterranean Sea and wind offered up 16 knots with gusts up to 25 knots reported on the race course.

Editor’s note: The USA team started stronger than they are finishing, and have now dropped to 7th in the Nations Trophy standings. Of the eight events, only the RS:X Boys and Girls offer a realistic chance for North American sailors to medal. Ignacio Berenguer (MEX) is in fourth, 3 points off the podium while Marion Lepert (USA) is in fourth, 5 points off the podium. – Results
