High Performance Regatta in Annapolis

Following the long tradition set by the Storm Trysail Club for having an end-of-season big boat regatta in the Chesapeake, organizers from the High Performance Rule (HPR) and the Annapolis Match Racing Center (AMRC) are pleased to announce the 2013 High Performance Regatta is now open to entries.

Racing will start with a short distance race on Friday, November 1st, followed by two days of course racing held over Saturday and Sunday, November 2nd – 3rd, with as many as four races/day if conditions permit.

Boats racing in HPR scoring will be competing for the 2013 HPR East Coast Championship title.

“Racing in Annapolis in the late Fall is superb,” says Steve Benjamin, co-owner of the Carkeek HPR 40 Spookie, who made her HPR racing debut here last year. “We had to cut off one day here in last year’s regatta due to the approach of Hurricane Sandy, but on the other days there was great racing and great enthusiasm. It was a perfect launch point for us to get ready for HPR racing in Key West in January.”

“Having a tight group of competitive race boats on short courses in multiple starts was fantastic last year,” said Geoff Ewenson, manager of Marc Glimcher’s Ker 40 Catapult. “We are very much looking forward to doing this again this year, and hope that others from New England as well as around the region can join us.”

The regatta supports the Universal Measurement System (UMS), wherein all boats have a complete set of measurements that can be used in any rating system. Boats that wish to be scored for HPR shall either have a valid HPR certificate or have a valid ORR, ORCi or IRC certificate so that an HPR certificate can be made from this data. Boats wishing to be scored for IRC shall have a valid IRC certificate.

“AMRC is pleased to offer this late-season opportunity to race competitive big boats in Annapolis,” said Jeff Borland, Principal Race Officer for the event. “There has been interest from not only local teams with boats like Farr 30’s, MC 38’s, Farr 40’s, J/122’s and Summit 40’s, but also boats from New England and even Canada to come join us. We promise that in three days of racing there will be a suitable mix of conditions to challenge everyone.”

The AMRC is a 501(c)(3) organization, so a portion of the entry fees for the event will help support the AMRC and thus be eligible for tax deduction.
