ISAF World Sailing Rankings – 9 December 2013

Following the completion last week of the second event of the 2013-14 ISAF Sailing World Cup season, the ISAF World Sailing Rankings have been updated and released.

Laser

Disappointment at the Laser World Championship turned into joy at ISAF Sailing World Cup Melbourne for World #1 Tom Burton (AUS) who won the second of five regattas of the 2013-14 series.Burton was optimistic heading into the Laser Worlds but for the World #1’s standards he was left disappointed with a ninth. He came into ISAF Sailing World Cup Melbourne with a point to prove and comprehensively took gold to remain at World #1.

Croatia’s Tonci Stipanovic sits two points off of Burton at World #2 followed by Bruno Fontes (BRA).

Robert Scheidt (BRA) came back with a bang at the Laser Worlds and picked up his ninth Laser World Championship title in Oman.

Scheidt’s previous Laser title came in 2005 at Fortaleza, Cerea, Brazil when he was at the height of his game and he found no problems getting back into the Laser swing in Oman.

The Brazilian shifts from World #71 to World #44, counting five regattas in his points total. With plenty of ISAF Sailing World Cup regattas on the horizon the Brazilian will quickly progress upwards, putting pressure on the top ranked Laser sailors.

Nacra 17

The Nacra 17 fleet are only adding points from ISAF Sailing World Cup Melbourne at this ranking release and there is consequently no change to the top 5 positions. Making a splash at their Nacra 17 debut in Melbourne were Olympic silver medallists Darren Bundock and Nina Curtis (AUS) who took home a gold medal from their first outing together. The 200 ranking points they also now own puts them at #35 on the list. Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin, have been campaigning a little longer and are the highest ranked Australian team, their ranking improves after they claimed the bronze medal in Melbourne after a dramatic Medal Race from #13 to #7.

Laser Radial

The addition of 200 ranking points is another reward for ISAF Sailing World Cup Melbourne gold medallist Tatiana Drozdovskaya (BLR) who moves up one place to #2 in the world in the Laser Radial rankings. Mathilde de Kerangat (FRA) remains at #1 but has just 15 points more than Drozdovskaya. Silver medallist in Melbourne, Dongshuang Zhang from China climbs 13 places to a career best of #4.

Men’s 470

With a perfect 1000 points, Mat Belcher and Will Ryan (AUS) are the undisputed world leaders in the men’s 470 class. Adding another regatta win at ISAF Sailing World Cup Melbourne it will be tough to knock them off the top of the rankings. The World # 2 and World # 3 positions are both occupied by ISAF Sailing World Cup medallists with Qingdao winners Lucas Calabrese and Juan de la Fuente (ARG) maintaining their position at #2. Moving up three places to third are Melbourne and Qingdao silver medallists Sime Fantela and Igor Marenic from Croatia.

Women’s 470

There is no change at the top of the women’s 470 rankings with Lara Vadlau and Jolanta Ogar (AUT) at #1, Fernanda Oliveira and Ana Luiza Barbachan (BRA) at #2 and Sophie Weguelin and Eilidh McIntyre (GBR) #3. Newcomer to the rankings is skipper Shasha Chen from China who enters at #38 after securing the gold medal at ISAF Sailing World Cup Melbourne with Yang Gao. Another new entry is ISAF Youth Worlds champion in the 420 Carrie Smith (AUS) who, sailing with former Olympic rower Sarah Cook, enters the rankings at #65 after they finished fifth in Melbourne.

Finn

Caleb Paine (USA) and Andrew Mills (GBR) hold on to the top two positions of the Finn rankings but there is a new face at # 3. ISAF Sailing World Cup Melbourne gold medallist Bjorn Allansson (SWE) adds 200 points to his score and climbs eleven places from #14. Next stop Miami where the big names are set to compete Allansson will be working hard to continue to rise up the rankings. Adding a sixth place in Melbourne to his points from the 2013 Finn Gold Cup and European Championships, Joseph McMillan jumps a massive 51 places.

Women’s RS:X

The top five sailors remain the same at the top of the Women’s RS:X rankings with Bryony Shaw (GBR) at #1. Moving up five places to a career best position of #6 is Malgorzata Bialecka from Poland who takes valuable points from her fifth place finish at ISAF Sailing World Cup Melbourne. Dominating the fleet in Melbourne were the Chinese athletes and gold medallist Manjia Zheng duly rockets 24 places up to #19. Silver medallist Qiaoshan Weng is also on the move and now lies at #10 in the world whilst bronze medallist Peina Chen climbs eleven places to #20.

Men’s RS:X

As in the women’s fleet, it was all about the Chinese sailors in the men’s RS:X at ISAF Sailing World Cup Melbourne. Gold medallist Chuankun Shi now counts the results from two events and moves up 37 places to #30, leapfrogging teammate and silver medallist Chunzhuang Liu who now sits at #32. The #1 position still belongs to Ivan Pastor Lafuente (ESP) with Ricardo Santos (BRA) at #2 and Ho Tsun Leung (HKG) at #3.

49erFX

Martine Grael and Kahena Kunze (BRA) return to the #1 position on the 49erFX rankings, switching places with Alexandra Maloney and Molly Meech from New Zealand. Olivia Price teamed up with Eliza Solly at ISAF Sailing World Cup Melbourne and stormed home in a windy Medal Race to take the gold medal, adding 200 ranking points she moves up four places to #8. Melbourne silver medallist Haylee Outteridge and Ella Clark also climb four places to #10. Completing the podium were Norwegian twins Ragna and Maia Agerup and they move three places up to #26.

49er

Great Britain lead the 49er rankings occupying all the top three positions. After competing at his first regatta with crew Chris Grube in Melbourne, Morrison gathers enough points to climb to #1 ahead of Dylan Fletcher and Alain Sign at #2 and David Evans and Edward Powys at #3. Released from America’s Cup duties, making an emphatic return to the 49er fleet at ISAF Sailing World Cup Melbourne were Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen (AUS) but with just two events counting points for them the Olympic champions are at #42. Australian teammates David Gilmour and Sam Phillips claimed the silver in Melbourne and leap 20 places up to #22 whilst bronze medallist Will Phillips and Rhys Mara (AUS) are at #23.
