Terhune wins the battle, Starck/Dieball wins the war

Published on March 22nd, 2014

After the 57-boat fleet at the Lightning Winter Championship (March 20-22) in St Petersburg, FL completed 3 races on Thursday, getting two more would require two more days.

Bill Faude with Jared Drake and Neil Fowler won the Friday race before the wind died. The first start on Saturday penalized several teams under the Z Flag, with the race later abandoned when the wind died. About 30 minutes later, the breeze filled in, with the fifth and final race won by Jody Starck with Skip Dieball and Ian Jones.

Mastering the challenging conditions was Allan Terhune with Katie Terhune and Sarah Chin as the overall winner, finishing 3 points ahead of Greg Fisher with Jo Ann Fisher and Jeff Eiber. Third overall was Jody Starck.

Fifty-six boats competed in the Winter Circuit, which comprised the Midwinters in Miami and the Winter Championship in St. Petersburg. Dieball and Starck, who shared helming duties, took the overall title.

The 2015 Lightning Winter Championship will be the US Trials for the 2015 Pan American Games.
