PHRF to launch new handicap credit

Published on April 1st, 2014

(April 1, 2014) – US Sailing’s PHRF National Committee and Offshore Big Boat Management Committee today announced a nationwide, compulsory, PHRF handicap credit of 1 sec/mi for every sailor, 16 or under, that is a US Sailing Youth member, who is carried onboard a PHRF raceboat. The credit is limited a maximum credit of 3 seconds per mile.

The rational given was that many years ago, all available juniors were swept onboard big boats dues to common sense among the big boat sailors and their concern for the long term health of their sport.

But now that big boat sailors are more concerned about results than the health of the sport, this new initiative will seek to influence PHRF racers and assure the long term health of the sport through rating credits.
