Rio Test: Learning, Learning, Learning

Published on August 12th, 2014

The International Sailing Regatta 2014, the largest sailing event ever held in Brazil, offered the first test event for the Rio 2016 Olympic Summer Games. All ten Olympic events were included, with 324 sailors from 34 countries participating.

“The first test event comes to a close with a sense of mission accomplished,” Rio 2016 Committee Sports Director Rodrigo Garcia said in Sports Features. “This has been a wonderful experience and a successful event, but most importantly we have learned a lot.”

The week-long competition utilised five courses, with the final courses that will be used in the Games to be selected following the second test event in 2015. Click here for course graphic.

“The Aquece Rio International Regatta has been a very successful regatta for ISAF,” International Sailing Federation Head of Competitions Alastair Fox said. “We have completed many of our goals in testing the competition areas, building our understanding of the local conditions and getting to know the national officials and the Rio 2016 team. We have a lot of information to take away and evaluate.”

The 2015 test event is provisionally scheduled for August 12-22.
