College Sailing Chalk Talk: Women’s Champs and Mary Hall

Published on April 29th, 2015

Chris Love provides this update on the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association 2014-2015 season along with his weekly Chalk Talk video report:

This week in college sailing, the three most competitive districts in women’s sailing held their qualifiers for Nationals. College of Charleston claimed the South Atlantic (SAISA) Women’s Champs at Eckerd by a comfortable margin. Middle Atlantic (MAISA) women faced off at a very cold, light and shifty St. Mary’s venue and Georgetown took the win thanks to consistency over both days. In New England (NEISA), the wind was equally shifty on Boston Harbor as BC hosted the conference championship for the Reed Trophy. After a tight battle all the way through, the home team edged out a win on the last set. Connecticut College won B division, but combined with a 10th in A, it just wasn’t enough for this highly competitive fleet.

In other conference championship news, Texas A&M Galveston defeated Tulane in the finals for the lone Southeastern (SEISA) Nationals berth. In the Northwest (NWICSA), Oregon State went 8-1 to dominate Team Race Champs at Washington.

Teams newly qualified for Nationals:
MAISA Women: Georgetown, Navy, St. Mary’s, ODU, Hobart, Cornell
NEISA Women: Boston College, Coast Guard, Yale, Brown, Vermont, Dartmouth, Bowdoin, Rhode Island
SAISA Women: College of Charleston, Eckerd, South Florida
SEISA Team Race: Texas A&M Galveston
NWICSA Team Race: Oregon State

The last interconference regattas of the year are now behind us, with ODU grabbing the Admiral’s Cup at Kings Point, Stanford hoisting the Boston Dinghy Cup, in its 80th running at Harvard/MIT, and UVM etching its name on the George E. Morris at Boston University.

This coming weekend will be the final regattas before Nationals, with five of the seven conferences holding their coed championship. Thirty-six coed teams in total qualify for the first round of the national championship.

All spring national championships to be held in Newport, RI on May 25-June 4:
Sperry Women’s Nationals: May 25-28, 2015
LaserPerformance Team Race Nationals: May 29-31, 2015
Gill Coed Nationals: June 1-4, 2015
