VIDEO: Sailing It Forward, The Melges Family

Published on October 22nd, 2015

At Harken, sailing is undeniably our business. But deep down, beyond the paychecks, we just plain love sailing. We love doing it. We love seeing other people do it. We love sharing their experiences after the fact. And we love to watch new people find our sport.

That’s always been true, but right now some of us are at the time when our kids are moving from ‘too young’ to ‘about right’ to start taking their own first sailing steps…beyond just being passengers. And we don’t want to blow it and lose them.

So we started looking for footsteps to walk in. We got some great advice. And then we thought, why not share it? The result is what we hope will be an ongoing video series we’re calling “Sailing It Forward”. Here, prominent sailors explain what they did to successfully introduce their kids to sailing. Success we came to find, is a broad term…our definition is that these sailors’ kids have a personal relationship with the sport…it’s not their Father or Mother’s sport they avoid.

We hope you enjoy video #1 with three generations of the Melges family: Buddy, son Harry III, and Harry’s 14-year old son Harry IV.
