2016 Melges 20 World Championship in Tuscany

Published on January 21st, 2016

Scarlino, Italy (January 21, 2016) – The heart of Tuscany, best known as one of the top racing venues in the Mediterranean has been selected by the International Melges 20 Class Association (IM20CA) as the next location of the Melges 20 World Championship. Serving as the main event of the 2016 season, Club Nautico Scarlino (CNS) will host the event on 25-28 August.

More than fifty teams are expected to be on the starting line at Marina di Scarlino, one of Europe’s very best host facilities situated near what is already a proven race course. This venue is no stranger to the Melges class of keelboats. In past seasons, Scarlino demonstrated itself to be a benchmark location in terms of racing conditions and first-class hospitality.

“We’re delighted to come back to Italy to organize our biggest event in 2016. Italy and Europe are one of the most active Melges 20 zones,” said newly appointed International Class President Richard Davies. “This event will be a top regatta but in addition, a truly special championship due to the warm and charming atmosphere. The organization by CNS and their very professional staff will be, without a doubt sheer perfection. For sure, it will be a 100% full-on Italian experience – a not to be missed occasion.”

“We are so proud to be appointed as organizers of the next Melges 20 World Championship,” proclaimed Claudia Tosi, Club Manager at Club Nautico Scarlino. “We know this Class so very well and understand that many candidates have been reviewed before awarding us the title of World Championship host. It makes us very happy to have been selected.”

“2016 at Club Nautico Scarlino is going to be one of our best ever,” continued Tosi. “The wind conditions at the end of August here are just spectacular. Teams can count on a stable, thermal breeze – it’s absolutely the best time of year to race here at Marina di Scarlino. We simply can’t wait to open the doors to all Melges 20 sailors traveling from all over the world!”
