Coville Begins Easterly Turn

(November 14, 2016; Day 9, 23:16 UTC) – Nearing 30° South, Thomas Coville (FRA) and the 31m maxi trimaran SODEBO ULTIM continue to build their lead on the solo round the world record. After clocking 628.6 nm over the past 24 hours, Coville is 488.83 nm ahead of the current record, with his southerly trajectory in the Atlantic beginning to turn left toward the tip of South Africa. The current record of 57d 13h 34m 6s was set by Francis Joyon (FRA) on the 29.8m trimaran IDEC in January 2008.

Background: Thomas Coville (FRA) and the 31m maxi trimaran SODEBO ULTIM started the attempt to break the solo round the world record from in Brest (France) on November 6. The current record of 57d 13h 34m 6s, which starts and finishes between the island of Ushant and Lizard Point in southern England, was set by Francis Joyon (FRA) on the 29.8m trimaran IDEC in January 2008.
