World Sailing Speed Record Council Ratifies Alex Thomson Record

The World Sailing Speed Record Council announced the establishment of a new World Record, Singlehanded Monohull and 60 ft Monohull 24 Hour Record. Alex Thomson (GBR) aboard his yacht, “Hugo Boss”, a 60 ft Monohull during the Vendee Globe broke the previous record. On January 15 – 16, 2017, starting at 07:00:00 UTC on January 15, 2017, Thomson sailed a distance of 536.81 NM over 24 hours, averaging 22.36 kts boat speed.

The previous record was set by Francois Gabert (FRA) aboard “MACIF”,a 60 ft Monohull, December 9-10, 2012, also during the Vendee Globe. At that time, Gabert sailed 534.48 nm with an average boat speed of 22.27 kts.
