Lost containers littering Australia

Published on June 2nd, 2018

Nappies, sanitary products, and surgical masks have washed onto beaches along the New South Wales (Australia) coastline after a cargo ship lost 83 containers. The incident occurred in heavy seas on June 1 while the ship was ship on its way from Taiwan to Port Botany.

New South Wales Roads and Maritime Services executive director Angus Mitchell said the containers went overboard from the 268-metre YM Efficiency – a Libyan-registered container ship – about 30 kilometres off the coast of Port Stephens in Commonwealth waters.

People had been advised to look out for the 12-metre containers at sea and onshore. The manifest provided for the containers indicates there were no hazardous materials in them, and any items recovered from containers remain the property of the consignor and can’t be salvaged.
