That’s a lot of floaters to avoid

Published on September 23rd, 2025

Among the top nightmares for any offshore sailor is a container collision. They’re hard to see, hard as steel, and very hard on boats. Containers frequently fall off ships, and a new ship has set a world record with the greatest container load to date.

Containers are uniform in shape, and either 20- or 40-feet in length. The shipping industry measurement for load is the Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit (TEU) which is derived from the dimensions of a 20-foot container. One TEU equals one 20-foot container, while one 40-foot container is two TEUs.

The ship, capable of 24,136 TEU, set the record when it loaded 22,233 TEU for delivery from Singapore to England. If something bad happens to the ship, that’s a lot of floaters  along a route that rounds the African continent to Europe.
