Sail Canada Sailor of the Month

Published on August 21st, 2018

Sail Canada’s Sailor of the Month award acknowledges sailing achievements by Canadians involved or associated with the sport in all its forms. Here is the latest recipient.

The 2018 Laser North American Championship took place last month from July 12-15 at the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club in Long Beach, CA. Attracting 161 sailors for four solid days of racing in the Laser, Laser Radial, and Laser 4.7 fleets, Olympian and Canadian Sailing Team (CST) member Brenda Bowskill attended the event in full swing after having taken some time off.

“Long Beach was a great place to sail,” Brenda notes. “In the training beforehand, it was too hot for the sea breeze to fill in so we had some light air practice the days leading up to the regatta. As the regatta began, the sea breeze began to kick. We had most races in 14-20 knots.”

Brenda kept to the top of the leaderboard, followed by fellow CST member Sarah Douglas, placing first and second overall. She never relinquished her top spot and kept a steady pace throughout the event.

“It’s been great training since my return after finishing my degree and even better to finally start racing again,” shared Brenda. “In the same week, I received my results for my board examination saying I have passed as an RN and then went on to win the regatta.”

A mention goes out to Eric Lyall and Andrew Moreno for their 1st place finish at the 2018 US 29er National Championship.

Congratulations to the Helly Hansen Sailor of the Month – Brenda Bowskill
