Field complete for Red Bull Foiling Generation Finals

Published on November 4th, 2018

Designed to find the best youth sailors aged 16-20, 16 teams competed in the US qualifier for the Red Bull Foiling Generation held November 2-4 in Miami, FL. Sailing the two-person Flying Phantom, Ian MacDiarmid and Nicolas Muller survived the four-boat heat format to triumph in the winner-take-all final.

The win didn’t come easy though. During the semifinal race, their catamaran flipped over, but they were able to race fast and come back to place 2nd in the heat and qualifier for the finals, where they would win US national title and advance to the Finals on November 9-11 in Miami, FL.

“It was good to be sailing together again and a ton of fun competing against everyone,” said the 19 year old MacDiarmid. “After we flipped, Nick kept us really calm and got us back up. Both his trap wires broke, but we got untangled and once we got going, we were confident.”

The world’s largest youth sailing program, Red Bull Foiling Generation was launched by Roman Hagara and Hans Peter Steinacher in 2015, building high-level skills that have helped participants advance toward professional careers and Olympic-class programs for the 2020 Games.

“The competition was great and the conditions on land and water were perfect. It was a great final race with a lot of lead changes, and it was exciting to watch,” commented Hagara, who won Olympic Gold with Steinacher in 2000 and 2004.

Final Results:
1. Ian MacDiarmid & Nicolas Muller
