2021 Nite Class US Nationals

Published on March 6th, 2021

In the crazy fickle world of iceboating, the 2020-21 season presented its greatest challenge yet. Beyond the complexity of COVID-19, the weather conditions and late freezes, with large snow dumps mixed in between, never presented the opportunity for much of any ice time this season.

However, the goal of the Nite Class was still to host its 2021 Nationals. With sailors putting their trust in class leadership, suitable ice was confirmed for March 6-7 at Green Lake, Wisconsin. But with five different events going on that same weekend, would people come?

In the end 29 Nites showed up for the event with competitors traveling in from all over the Midwest. In fact, the Nite Nationals was the second biggest event attended … a testimony to the growing strength of the Nite Class.

The 2021 Championship was a lot different then in the past, as it was evident there’d be just one day so it would take efficiency to get off five races in each fleet before both the ice conditions, the sun, and the wind stopped us.

And that’s what got done with five races in the silver fleet and five races in the gold fleet to wrap up the Nite Championship for 2021. Gold fleet champion Chad Rechgyl sailed a near perfect event with the Silver fleet once again won by Dick Grota.

As the door closes on 2021, the class reflects on the addition of 14 new owner used boats into the rolls, membership going through the roof and three regattas that got completed. In the realm of iceboating, it was a successful year.
