Riva del Garda, Italy (July 4, 2021) – The arrival of a storm today allowed for just one race to conclude the third and final day of the qualification series valid for the Optimist World Championship.
With five races and one discard for the four qualifying fleets, Weka Bhanubanhd (THA) leads the 259-boat fleet with a scoreline of 5-1-1-1-2, holding a four point margin over Brazilian Alex Di Francesco Kuhl in second. Italian Alex Demurtas, who also won three of five races, is third with the American Gil Hackel and the Irish Rocco Wright completing the top five.
The girls’ ranking is led by Ewa Lwandowska from Poland who is ninth overall.
Now that qualifications have been completed, athletes will be engaged in two days of Team World Championship. The team race will start tomorrow morning and over forty national teams have already confirmed their participation.
With a maximum of five athletes per nation, there are three consecutive days of qualifying on July 2-4 that will divide the fleet into Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Emerald groups for the final stages, scheduled for July 7-9. On July 5-6, the participants will compete within their nation for the Team World Championship.
