Gregg Morton wins Finn Masters North Americans 2021

Published on September 12th, 2021

The 2021 Finn Masters North American Championship attracted 19 competitors for the 8-race series September 10-12 in San Diego, CA. Gregg Morton (above) won half the races, finishing with a 10 point lead to claim the title over Rob Coutts in second and James Buley in third.

As the daily conditions increased from 7 to 15 knots, Morton proved to have an edge as the day progressed. “I just seemed to have a little more wheels than I’ve had in the past,” said Morton. “I haven’t sailed in a Finn since last February and then just jumped into this regatta…so I impressed myself too.”

Hosted by San Diego Yacht Club, Staff Commodore and event organizer Mike Dorgan noted how Morton was in a league of his own. “Competitors commented he seemed to have ‘another gear’ sailing upwind, sailing a couple degrees higher and a couple tenths of a knot faster.

“And putting an explanation mark on his regatta, he sailed the last race – even though he already won the regatta – winning the last race too.”

The fight for second place between Coutts and James Buley came down to the final race. Coutts was able to stay ahead of Buley, finishing third in race eight. Buley was stuck in the middle of the fleet and finished the final race in eighth, allowing Coutts to take second overall.
