Diaz/Brotons hold lead at Snipe Westerns

Boston, MA (September 23, 2021) – The third day of the 2021 Snipe Western Hemisphere & Orient Championship was planned around the forecast which ran the gamut from 5 knots to 20, and which proved to be true. With two more races completed, and a discard now with six races on the scoreboard, Augie Diaz/ Barbie Brotons (USA) retain their overall lead with scores today of 7-5.

The fleet headed out in beautiful wind of 8-11 that quickly had rain squalls roll through, leaving an unstable breeze and a challenge to set a proper course. After a recall start, followed by a postponement for two hours with little to no wind, the wind finally settled into a South Easterly with 8-11 knots and mostly sunny skies.

Race 5 found Brazilians Rodrigo Stephan de Almeida and Gustavo Baiano lead from the start followed by Ernesto Rodriguez and Kathleen Tocke (USA) with Arthur Blodgett and Gracie Howie (USA, above) in third.

The RC started race 6 immediately as puffs reached 20 knots at the weather mark. George Szabo and Dianna Waterbury (USA) were caught OCS and the rest of the fleet was off, with Rodriguez/ Tocke taking an early lead which they extended to a horizon job. With winds varying from 10 to 20 knots, Matias and Constanza Seguel (CHI) were second followed by Alfonso Garcia Bringas and Andre Guaragna (MEX) in third.

It was moving day for current European and North American Champions Rodriguez/ Tocke (USA) who moved up from seventh to third overall after a stellar day (2-1) and discarding their 22nd in race 3.

Nine races are planned for September 21-25, with tomorrow’s forecast looking ominous with winds exceeding the Snipe Class rule wind limit (25+) and heavy rain.
