Full roster for 2022 Worrell 1000 Race

Published on October 19th, 2021

After the 2019 Worrell 1000 Reunion Race brought back the beach cat contest which held 20 editions from 1976 to 2002, the plan was for the 1000nm contest along the US southeast coast to return in 2021.

But due to the uncertainty linked to the pandemic, it was in December 2020 when race postponed one year, with the plan to host the offshore long distance beach catamaran race between Florida and Virginia on May 9-21 2022.

That’s still the plan.

Starting at Hollywood Beach, FL, the Worrell 1000 has a full roster of 17 teams representing 6 countries, including returning champions Randy Smyth (6-time Worrell Champ) and Rod Waterhouse (4-time Worrell Champ).

The event will be run on Formula 18 boats with multiple beach stages toward the final finish line in Virginia Beach, VA. It’s 1,000 miles of offshore sailing which tests the endurance of the sailors and construction of the boats.

Katie Pettibone and Carolijn Brouwer – veterans of Volvo Ocean Race and Olympic campaigns – join veterans Gerard Loos, Chris Green, and Larry Ferber with their crews from the 2019 race, and a son of a former competitor – Jared Sonnenklar – will be continuing the family legacy of Worrell racing.

The awards banquet will be May 22. Additional details at https://worrell1000race.com/
