Published on October 25th, 2021
Sarasota, FL (October 25, 2021) – The opening day of the 2021 Sunfish World Championship completed three races with winds from the southwest in the mid- to high teens with a bit more during race one. Jonathan Martinetti from Equator sits atop the leaderboard after finishing a very consistent 2-1-3 in the 100 boat fleet.
Right behind Martinetti is his countryman Matias Dyck with 1-3-8, followed by Peter Stanton from the USVI in third with Americans Conner Blouin and Jeff Olson in fourth and fifth. Blouin got the bullet in race 3.
This is the 50th World Championship for the International Sunfish Class, dating back to 1970. “This regatta has particular meaning to those of us in the Sunfish community,” noted ISCA President Rich Chapman. “The fact that it’s our 50th, and that we have sailors ranging from teenagers to grandparents speaks volumes about the versatility and vitality of Sunfish sailing.”
Tomorrow’s forecast is calling for 10-15 knots with four races being considered as the forecast for the remainder of the event is “sporty” as a significant cold front is moving towards the region.
The 50th edition is being held on October 25-29.
